Is it true that a great cover design can help make a difference?
One past project for our long standing client, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA – formally known as PMA, Publishers Marketing Association), that illustrates the power of a great cover design is the Membership Resource Directory.
The Directory is no longer in print, but for years the Association published the Directory to distribute at trade shows. Initially the Directories were passed over. No one was paying any attention to them. We were given the task of creating a new cover design that would entice people to pick them up and take them home.
The WOW Factor
We came up with the idea of putting a colorful image on the cover that people would recognize. Like an old master’s painting but something original. For our first Directory cover we created original artwork in the computer emulating the style of Van Gogh. It featured a colorful, painterly image of a book with a computer mouse connected to it representing the merging of old and new book publishing technologies.
Focus on The User
It proved to be a very successful strategy and the newly designed Membership Resource Directory flew off the shelves at trade shows. We continued this marketing strategy and designed a series of colorful, eye-catching Directory covers that were inspired by other artists’ work including Warhol, Dali, and Picasso.
